Owned and operated by Dr. Linda Uniat, the Retina Imaging Centre is northern Alberta's longest-established clinic dealing with the full range of retina problems. Based in Edmonton, Alberta, Dr. Uniat is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta's Department of Ophthalmology, which is located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital just across the street from the Retina Imaging Centre facilities.

The Centre is equipped with state of the art diagnostic and operating equipment, to assist Dr. Uniat and her staff in providing caring and compassionate treatment for patients from across northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Patients requiring hospital surgery are treated in the Royal Alexandra Hospital's surgical suites.

Born and raised in Alberta, Dr. Uniat received her M.D. designation from the University of Alberta, before studying and practicing in New Zealand and taking her retina specialty degree from the University of Washington in St. Louis, Mo. She returned to Edmonton to open her specialty practice in 1987.

Maintaining her reputation for providing state of the art care, in 2003, Dr. Uniat became the first ophthalmologist in Alberta to acquire an optical coherence tomography unit, which provides totally painless and graphically clear instantaneous diagnosis of a range of macular diseases. Other patient-care equipment used in the Retina Imaging Centre includes an argon laser unit for treating diabetic retinopathy — a rapidly increasing problem in North America — and an ultrasound unit, which provides computer images of eye damage, including trauma and haemoraging.

All the equipment is used to help Dr. Uniat and her colleagues communicate more effectively with the patients, to help them understand what is happening to them and the steps necessary for optimum care and treatment.
